MATCH PREVIEW
Manchester United
Letting a lead slip twice, squandering a penalty and conceding an 89th minute equaliser against Fulham last Sunday left Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson raging, especially as his side missed out on the title last season by a solitary point.
But the Red Devils are a team that never dwells on a bad result and, on paper, West Ham seem ideal opposition as Ferguson's side look to play catch up on Chelsea's goal difference that already stands at +12.
Manchester United may rest Paul Scholes and draft Michael Carrick or Ryan Giggs into central midfield. Wayne Rooney returns after missing the match with Fulham and will partner Dimitar Berbatov in attack.
WestHam United
West Ham are likely to opt for a five-man midfield, so striker Frederic Piquionne could give way to midfielder Radoslav Kovac. Matthew Upson should return to the side after missing the Carling Cup game against Oxford with a facial injury.
Hammers boss Avram Grant faced an insurmountable challenge when he replaced Paul Hart at crisis club Portsmouth last season, but on the evidence of West Ham's first three games of the season, he has another serious job on his hands to install faith in a team that he says carry a lot of "psychology problems."
The Hammers are already off to their worst-ever start to a Premier League season and captain Scott Parker admitted he is "dreading" the thought of Saturday's trip to Old Trafford. If that wasn't bad enough, they then face Chelsea, Stoke away and Tottenham.
POSSIBLE FORMATION
Manchester United (4-4-2)
Van der Sar;
O’Shea, Vidic, Evans, Evra;
Valencia, Fletcher, Scholes, Park;
Berbatov, Rooney.
WestHam United (4-4-2)

Fulham
Fulham have not had the greatest of starts to the season after playing a goalless draw against Bolton. Fulham will look to get a draw against Mancheter United at the maximum and do not undermine their chance of doing it at Craven Cottage. Last season, Fulham recorded one of the most surprising results of the campaign when they won this fixture 3-0 with goals from Danny Murphy, Bobby Zamora and Damien Duff. That was their second successive home win over United.
Fulham test Mark Schwarzer, who missed the draw at Bolton with a back injury. Left-back Paul Konchesky, absent at the Reebok Stadium, could also return.

Fulham – last few games
vs Bolton – Draw 0-0
vs Werder Bremen – Win 5-1
vs Portsmouth – Loss 1-0
Fulham (Possible, 4-4-1-1):
Schwarzer; Pantsil, Hangeland, Hughes, Konchesky; Davies, Etuhu, Murphy, Duff; Gera; Zamora.
Manchester United
Last season's Premier League runners-up will be looking to continue their good start to the football year. So far, Man U have overcome champions Chelsea in the Community Shield, before securing a comfortable 3-0 over newly promoted Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Monday, thanks to goals from Berbatov, Fletcher and Giggs.
Rio Ferdinand and Owen Hargreaves being the only long-term absentee, Ferguson can pick from a large pool of talented players, Evergreen veterans Giggs and especially Scholes may feature, as they continue to defy the ageing process with some stellar performances.
After starting the game against Newcastle United with both Berbatov and Rooney up front, Ferguson may be tempted to call on the same pairing again as Wayne Rooney in particular looks to recapture the form he showed through most of last season.
However, with promising Javier Hernandez impressing so far and midfielder Michael Carrick ready to come in too (not to mention Michael Owen), there may be changes in Man United's approach for their first away trip of the season.
Manchester United – last few games
vs Newcastle United – Win 3-0
vs Chelsea – Win 3-1
vs Airtriciy XI – Win 7-1
Manchester United (Possible, 4-4-2):
Van der Sar; O’Shea, Vidic, Evans, Evra; Valencia, Scholes, Fletcher, Nani; Rooney, Berbatov.

Having narrowly lost their Premier League title to Chelsea last season, Manchester United begin their quest to regain top spot in the land with a visit from newly-promoted Newcastle United. Chelsea's big win over West Bromwich 6-0 it would seem to be motivation for foster children Ferguson to win the game against Newcastle tomorrow. Rooney et inevitably also be a big win for Chelsea on goal difference with a not so distant.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Manchester United
The Mexican’s impressive World Cup showing and pre-season goalscoring exploits means the Old Trafford faithful will be looking forward to welcoming the Red Devils’ new striker to the ranks. Whilst he is unlikely to start the game, he may be introduced at some point and will no doubt fancy his chances of a debut goal in the Premier League against one of the top flight’s new boys.
Newcastle United
The midfielder was the Championship’s Player of the Season and Newcastle will look to his battling qualities and experience at Old Trafford. Of course the former Bolton Wanderers man was also amongst the goals last season, netting 18 times, and against a home defence missing several key members he may prove a threat.
PREDICTION
This could be a tough opener for the home side who have struggled on the opening day in recent seasons and will have some of their World Cup stars still some way from top form. However, Newcastle’s record at Old Trafford is poor and the extra quality the home side possess should mean they have enough to secure a narrow victory.
POSSIBLE FORMATION
Manchester United (4-4-2)
Van der Sar;
O’Shea, Vidic, Evans, Fabio;
Valencia, Carrick, Scholes, Park;
Owen, Rooney.
Newcastle United (4-4-2)
Harper;
Perch, Jose Enrique, Coloccini, Williamson;
Routledge, Guthrie, Barton, Nolan;
Gutiérrez, Carroll.
